Broker Training Requirements for Federally-Facilitated Marketplace & Federally-Facilitated SHOP

Take These Important Steps So You Can Sell & Be Paid Commissions for Individual Marketplace (Exchange) and SHOP (Small Group) Business for the 2015 Plan Year

Agents and brokers who want to participate in the Federally-Facilitated Marketplace for the 2015 plan year will need to complete new training requirements, according to information released by CMS.

Registration for the 2015 plan year training for brokers and agents will be available in early July. At that time, agents and brokers may begin completing their FFM registration requirements for the 2015 plan year.

Agents and brokers must complete certain registration requirements on an annual basis. For more information on FFM agent and broker registration requirements for the 2015 plan year, please see a new resource we have posted: “Registering to Participate in the Federally-facilitated Marketplace for the 2015 Plan Year: What Agents and Brokers Need to Know.”

According to CMS, here is what brokers and agents can do to start preparing for the 2015 plan year registration:

1) Confirm your National Producer Number (NPN) in MLN is correct: the NPN associated with your MLN account must conform to the standards established by the National Insurance Producer Registry.  

The NPN associated with your MLN account must:

  • Be numeric only; alphabetic and special characters are not permissible
  • Be 10 digits or less
  • Not begin with a zero

To view and edit your NPN, please log into your MLN account at https://Marketplace.MedicareLearningNetworkLMS.com and

  • Navigate to the “My Account” page from the upper right corner after logging in (this will appear under your name)
  • Select “Edit” in the “User Information” section
  • Update your NPN and click “Save”

 2) Confirm your user type/user role in MLN is correct: MLN auto-assigns your training curriculum, based on the user role you select. To ensure that MLN auto-assigns you the appropriate curriculum for 2015 plan year registration, please confirm that your desired user type/user role is selected in your MLN profile. (Note: You selected your user type/user role when you created your MLN account.) You may edit your user type/user role by editing your MLN profile after you log in to your MLN account. MLN will then auto-assign the appropriate curriculum, when you return to complete training for the 2015 plan year.
